Pavlos Michaelides was born in Nicosia, Cyprus, in 1980. He is descended from displaced grandparents from the villages of Mut Mersina and Antalya in Asia Minor; his parents are also displaced refugees, from the occupied Cypriot villages of Kythrea and St. Amvrosios, Kyrenia. Pavlos studied Music at the University of Indianapolis, USA, majoring in violin. He is also a graduate of the University of Tucson (Business Administration, Management Information Systems) and of Flagstaff, Northern Arizona University, USA (MBA majoring in Finance).

Pavlos served as concertmaster and member of various symphonic and other musical ensembles. He has recorded widely in Greek discography, such as, for example, in Alkinoos Ioannidis’s Mikri Valitsa (2014), and has played in for many and different Greek song writers and singers, including Dionysis Savvopoulos, Alkinoos Ioannidis, and Glykeria.

As member and co-founder of Eiristho en Parodo (Athens, 2006-2010), Pavlos’s first record was Oistrilasia (El Capitan 2010). In 2014, he co-started the music group Trio Levante, a group that focuses on the urban folk sound of the “Smyrna” composers. “Trio Levante” released Urban Folk Songs in 2018. In 2017, he co-founded Aes Cyprium Ensemble, which has as its main subject the Cypriot musical tradition, which it approaches as adjacent to various musical traditions of neighbouring places, while at the same time emphasizing its singular stylistic elements that are specific to its locality. In 2017, the Aes Cyprium Ensemble was selected by the Artistic Music Association of Domna Samiou to present their work at the first meeting of new traditional music ensembles ‘The Leaves of Triantaphyllia’ at the Athens Concert Hall.

Cypriot music was and is an integral part of our culture, but Cypriot tunes played with the violin as the main instrument remain essentially unrecorded in terms of their overall melodic and harmonic composition. This album records, for the first time, these tunes in a melodically complete manner. Through a long course of listening, research, study and thorough engagement as a violinist, Michaelides has completed a work many decades in the making.

This work appeals to listeners, scholars, and musicologists. It is of special value to folk performers (mainly instrumentalists) of Cypriot traditional music with the drive and will to bring outward our folk music tradition. This record is a remarkable and important addition to the musical culture of our country and a reference point in existing collections, contributing to the intangible cultural heritage of Cyprus and the wider region.

Note: the scientific name of copper (cuprum) is named after Cyprus and not the other way around!
